The Great Gathering

November 04 2013 - Rally Reports Category

Being a Society concerned primarily with road steam and its associated items, we don’t often get too involved with the railways. There are plenty of existing books, clubs, magazines and groups if that is what you are into, however for the Mallard 75 celebrations we thought we’d make an exception. For those who don’t know this year is the anniversary of the steam speed record (126mph) being set by the A4 Locomotive No.4468 ‘Mallard’. As part of the celebrations sister engine No.4464 ‘Bittern’ has undertaken some 90 mph runs, but more importantly the National Railway Museum has temporarily repatriated the two other surviving A4’s which had been gifted to Canada (‘Dominion of Canada’) and the United Stated (‘Dwight D Eisenhower). The Great Gathering at York sees all 6 remaining A4’s together round the turntable side by side, a sight that is never likely to be repeated

A few committee members from the Society have visited York to witness this spectacle and have sent in the pictures seen below. The locomotives present are

6007 ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’ presented in BR Blue, this loco is main line certified though is more often seen on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway

6008 ‘Dwight D Eisenhower’ cosmetically restored by the NRM for the gathering in BR Green and on loan from America

6008 ‘Union of South Africa’ in BR Green owned by John Cameron and mainline certified

4464 ‘Bittern’ in LNER Garter Blue this engine has also been presented as ‘Silver Link’ and more recently ‘Dominion of New Zealand’

4468 ‘Mallard’ the record holder and star of the show

4489 ‘Dominion of Canada’ also cosmetically restored by the NRM and here returned to Garter Blue Coronation Spec with chrome plated letters, numbers and bell
