Books
During the last few years the EATES has published eight books, each of which has documented some aspects of our agricultural and industrial heritage and East Anglian village life.
East Anglia is well known for having been the home of steam engine builders such as Burrells, Garretts, Ransomes, Paxmans and Youngs, therefore details and photographs of Steam Rollers and Steam Wagons and Showmans, Traction and Ploughing engines, together with their associated equipment, feature prominently in the eight publications.
The dry humour and eccentricities of country folk are captured by items and anecdotes, and insights are given into village life of days gone by, all of which makes interesting reading for those with a nostalgia for the past.

Steaming Down the Ages. Author Pat Freeman.
(76 pages, soft back with perfect binding, colour cover, 210 mm x 200mm, 98 black and white photographs.)

This book is especially for those who wish to see steam engines, and their crews, as they were during their working days. Almost 100 photographs, obtained from a variety of sources, are shown from about 1894 up to 1985, with the majority having been taken during the first half of the 20th century. Each has a descriptive caption and some are extended.
Also included are ‘thumb nail’ histories of some engine builders such as Burrells, Garretts, Ransomes, Sims & Jefferies, Paxmans and Collings. This latter firm only made three engines and the only survivor is featured on the front cover.
It is the intention of this book to present pictures which capture scenes that will be looked on by many with nostalgia, but it is also hoped that they will stimulate an interest in a younger generation who may wish to see how their parents, or grand parents, lived and worked in the ‘Age of Steam’.

Price:  £5.90 + p.& p. 90p.

Contractor and Factor. Author Pat Freeman.
(101 pages, softback, colour cover, 210mm x 200mm, 9 colour and 90 black and white photographs.)

This book covers aspects of the work undertaken by early road-making and steam-ploughing contractors and firms supplying and maintaining agricultural equipment. Two companies are looked at in detail: W. G. Smoothy & Son of Rochford, Essex, and M. Bloomfield & Sons Ltd. of Debenham, Suffolk.
The majority of the photographs have come from family albums, therefore for the first time the general public is able to see these extremely interesting records of steam engines, steam ploughs and associated equipment of years gone by.

Price:  £8.90 + £1.20 p.& p..

The EATEC is also pleased to  be associated with the sale of some of the late
G. F. A. Gilbert's publications. Geoff. wrote several books about steam engines from knowledge acquired from boyhood on work throughout a career covering agricultural contracting and railway engineering, and from leisure pursuits spent with various steam engines and appliances.

Illustrated Supplement: Traction Engine Design and Construction 1900-1930.
(128 pages, A4 hardback with dust cover.)

This supplement has been produced as a follow-up to "Traction Engine Design and Construction 1900-1930", published in 2000 but now out of print, and consists mainly of photographs and drawings with extended, detailed, captions. Areas covered are: Complete and Partially-erected Engines; Firebox and Boiler Fittings; Engine Details; Wheels, Axles and Spring Gear; Rim Brakes; Winding Gear; Clutch Gear; Road Roller Details. There is also coverage of miscellaneous items such as Mirror Fittings and Registration Number Plates for traction engines.
It should be in demand by those who have the original book, but it can stand alone on its own merits as a reference book on many aspects of traction engine design and construction.

Price:  £19.50 + £3.50 p.& p..

Burrell Style 1900 - 1932.
(295 pages, A4 hardback with dust cover.)

This book concentrates on the engine designs and practices used by Charles Burrell & Sons and examines, from an engineering standpoint, the strengths and weaknesses of the Marque when contrasted against a number of competitor's products.
Over 100 photographs, illustrations and main drawings are used to emphasise various points and a list of 460 engine parts, each having its own drawing, should be most useful for a Burrell engine owner.
There is also a comprehensive abstract of specifications of engines from No.2238 to No.4094; build dates and initial Customer details are given.
Burrell enthusiasts should find this book invaluable.

Price:  £26.00 + £4.00 p.& p..

Steam Thrashing 1900 - 1950.
(192 pages, A4 hardback with dust cover, 139 photographs and illustrations.)

Chobber and Sutter, Capes and Choles - do these names mean anything to you? They are contained in a 'Glossary of Terms' of over 100 items connected with steam thrashing at the start of the book. Reference is then made to Portable and Traction engines used for thrashing and details are given of relevant design parameters, additional equipment and fittings, day-to-day maintenance and firing-up procedures.
The assembly of a "Thrashing Train" for its journey by road to a farm site is covered and the problems of manoeuvrability, setting-up and operational procedures are also touched upon. A typical working day and the cost of hiring thrashing tackle are also mentioned.
This book, with its excellent photographs and their extended captions, is playing its part in recording what was once a traditional way of life for many country people.

Price:  £26.00 + £4.00 p.& p..

Duke of Kent on the Three Counties Road Run from the heavy metal video

'The Steve Neville Film Archive’ DVD.
Produced by World Video. Narrated by Keith Honour and Hugh Dyson I.Eng. MIMechE with assistance from Reg and Tony Brown, Mike Dyson, Kevin Swann, Amy Dyson, Smudge Smith, Derrick Rule, Sally Wright & Michael Pumfrey.

Throughout Steve’s long involvement with Traction engines he took many hours of
9 mm cine. film covering a wide variety of subject matter.  On his untimely departure in 1994, The East Anglian Traction Engine Society was, through the executors, bequeathed his film collection. This film collection has been, in parts, shown in our club film nights. However, throughout the past few years it has been slowly deteriorating as this type of film does. In 2006 all of the film in the collection was mastered to digital format as a preservation project funded by the East Anglian Traction Engine Society to preserve it for future generations to enjoy. Having viewed the end result it was decided after one of our committee meetings to pick the best bits of the film footage and try and turn them into a film for all to enjoy.
Click Review for a review of the DVD by Martin Fagg.

Price £14.00 ( EATES members £12.00) + £2.50 p.& p.

The video of the Three Counties Steam Tour.
In VHS PAL Stereo. Running time: 59 minutes.

This official video was shot for us by a professional cameraman using broadcast quality equipment and, to quote Old Glory 'It shows!'. As well as filming the engines on the road, a proportion of the video is dedicated to less seen sections of Road Runs such as the preparation and everything else that goes on behind the scenes, or to quote the back of the box .....'captures the flavour of the event, from the delightful banter between those taking part to the sheer hard work along the way'.

Price £13.50 + £1.50 p.& p.
