Welcome to
the website of the East Anglian Traction Engine Society (EATES).
This was formed, on March 12th 1955, as a Club but when charitable
status was requested, and granted in 1986, its name had to be
changed to a Society. The Club (EATEC) then became the trading arm
of the EATES.
It was only the
second association of its kind to be formed in this country and its
aims were, and still are, to promote the preservation and running of
steam engines such as Portables, Showmans and Ploughing Engines,
Road Locomotives, Steam Rollers and Steam Wagons; to inform and
educate the Public of the part played by steam engines pertaining to
our industrial and agricultural heritage and village life, and the
pressing need for Steam Preservation to be a success.
To achieve the
above aims the EATES is involved with :-
Organising Steam
Engine Rallies on static sites.
Organising Steam
Engine Runs on public roads (an example being 'The Three Counties
Steam Tour',
held in 1997 over a period of three days and covering a 100-mile
route).
Giving talks to
the public on aspects of steam engine construction, operation and
maintenance.
Providing
opportunities for members, who have no engine, to be involved with
the crewing and operational maintenance of fellow-member’s engines.
Publishing
books, relevant to the dissemination to the wider public, of aspects
of the evolution and history of steam engines.
Issuing our
journals and news-letters.
National
Committees that have an overall view of factors affecting steam
engine practices and legislation, at the present time.
After browsing
through our web pages we hope that you will consider joining the
EATES, to add to the total of members now approaching 400 - many
from overseas. You will be made very welcome.
