Euston Park Rural Pastimes June 8th 2003
The Steam Section of the event attracted entries of ten full-size
and ten scale model engines.
Mervyn Button of Ipswich was there with his 1923 Aveling & Porter
C-type Roller, No.10718, which, when he bought it, was named
Co-Jack but he now wishes it to be known as No.9. This
was its Fleet No. when working for the Bedfordshre CC, who had it
from new. Trevor Wrench had recently rolled and fitted 1" thick
tyres to its rear wheels and Mervyn had re-fitted the scrapers and
water-lifter. The re-spraying is nearly finished and Mervyn is,
quite rightly, proud of his engine.
Trevor Wrench’s 1919 Clayton & Shuttleworth Agricultural Engine
Rambler,
No. 48215, was also on show and Alan Hines was there with his
completely restored 1914 Ruston, Proctor Traction Engine Jack,
No. 49804.
Jonathan Wheeler’s 1920 Ruston & Hornsby Traction Engine Oliver,
No.113043, was coupled to his rack-saw bench which was being
operated by him and his son, Sam.
Rodney Timson had brought along his 1908 Fowler A4 The Countess,
No.11421, recently re-tubed and re-lagged.
The "Father & Son", Old Nick and Little Ol' Nick, the
1908 Marshall Agricultural Engine, No. 49725, and its 6" scale
model, belonging to Ernie and Rachel Eagle, made a fine pair of
engines.
Although only a one-day event; over the past eleven years a total of
over £150,000 has been raised for the St.Nicholas’ Hospice and local
Churches - a magnificent achievement.
