Engines waiting to start outside Burrell MuseumIntroduction

The Three Counties Steam Tour took place over the four days of May 2nd-5th 1997 and covered over 100 miles of roads through Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex. Over 20 different steam vehicles took part in the Road Run ranging from almost all of the surviving Garrett Rollers through to a Stanley Steam Car. The stopping points were the various transport museums on the route and ones with varying connections to the makers of East Anglian Steam Engines. The one exception to this was the finishing point being the still going concern of Davey Paxman who now trade as part of G.E.C. but who very willingly opened up the original factory gate and part of the site for us.

Ken Goward at BressinghamThe idea of the event grew from a discussion between the late Roy Swain and our current club chairman Kevin Swann. From that it was converted into practical form by the club's sales officer Ken Goward and an increasingly large team of volunters and willing victims. The run started at mid-day Friday and finished on Monday afternoon with most of the engines managing to complete the course - although with the occasional helping hand from more modern technology.

Kevin Swann at the controls of Lord GeorgeAs well as providing an excuse for engine owners and others to spend four days touring around the East Anglian countryside the decision was made to try and raise money for charity as well. The chosen charity was Macmillan Cancer Relief as a mark of respect to our late president Steve Neville and the nurses who looked after him during his long final illness. In this respect as well the event was a major success with a cheque for £2,300 being handed over to the charity at the launch of 'Heavy Metal' the official video of the Road Run.
